Hills Quarry Products provided the sand used in the manufacture of the traditional lime walls featured in the award-winning ‘Mind Garden’ at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Designed by eight-time RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner Andy Sturgeon, the Mind Garden, created for the charity Mind, featured beautiful bespoke mortars made by Heritage Cob and Lime using sand from Hills’ Woodsford quarry in Dorchester.
The series of curved mortar walls were inspired by petals tossed to the ground, providing a brilliant backdrop for the plants whilst also creating framed views of the garden. They were made using Hills sharp sand as the base ingredient and blended with Heritage Cob and Lime’s Lime Putty with added crushed oyster shells.
Sarah from Heritage Cob and Lime said: “Hills’ amazing sharp sand has a quality that surpasses all others. With lime mortars we require a good level of aggregate throughout the sand and Hills’ ticks all the boxes. The team at Woodsford are great, it’s always a pleasure to deal with them.”
Terry Newsham, Commercial Business Manager, added: “We have worked with Heritage Cob and Lime for over 10 years, it is great that we’ve contributed to their success at the flower show, they are fantastic people to work with.”
After the Chelsea Flower Show has ended, the garden will be transported to Mind in Furness and people will be able to support each other in The Mind Garden for many years to come.
