Hills helps BBC DIY SOS team pave the way on playground project

The BCC’s DIY SOS team were in Southmead Bristol, working hard to transform the adventure playground locally known as ‘the ranch’. Hills Quarry Products are proud to have been able to donate 30 tonnes of Cotswold path gravel to help with the renovations. The TV show covering the project is due to air on BBC One on Tuesday 24 May at 8pm.

The large project organised by Nick Knowles and his DIY SOS team saw many local volunteers join to help the Southmead Development Trust, a resident-led charity working to improve health, wellbeing, and employment; and to help keep the local community strong, resilient, and resourceful.

The running of the playground was taken on by the Trust, but it sadly fell into disrepair, suffered from vandalism, and was unfit for purpose.

The build saw the project invigorate the Southmead Adventure Playground for future generations, to:
• Renovate the dilapidated playground and add exciting new features
• Re-build the burnt out ‘forest school’ shelter and clear the overgrown pond for ‘pond dipping’
• Re-style the community space to include a new kitchen and games area
• Re-lay the badly damaged basketball/football pitch (Multi-Use Games Area).

Hills Quarry Products Sales Consultant, Andy Shield (now retired), visited the site for the big reveal, and met the hard-working volunteers who made the build possible. He also heard from the Southmead Development Trust team, who expressed their gratitude and highlighted how much the build has meant to the trust who are now able to use the new facilities to generate more income and further help the community.
